This three bedroom flat in Kreuzberg had been added to and changed by both the tenants and the owners over the course of a decade and a half. However, without a full renovation, the floors had deformed to the point where it was creating problems for the long-term safety of the unit. The disruption caused by the installation of new balconies for the whole building provided the ideal time to repair the structure of the apartment and to remake it to modern standards. The new apartment plan configures itself around an angled corridor that reflects light between the two external elevations throughout the day. Facing the balcony the space was opened up to take advantage of the new outdoor area. The street-side of the plan was then redivided to be better suited for the young families moving to the area, and the bathroom outfitted with the modern standard of fixtures and fittings.
